  • Overview

Villa Zaca is located on the east coast of the island of Elba, in that bit of territory between Porto Azzurro and Cavo that is able to combine panoramic landscape and tranquillity throughout the year, as no other area of Elba can do. Villa Zaca stands in a splendid dominant hilly position, within the Minelba National Mining Park, overlooking the exclusive and enchanting bay of Ortano which is 1.5 km away on foot (only for expert walkers). The property is located in a centuries-old wood of cork oaks, maritime pines and numerous other protected plant species that guarantee strong oxygenation to the environment, even in the height of summer.

The villa is to be admired for the taste and obsessive attention to detail with which it was recently renovated, immediately becoming the setting for photo shoots on behalf of magazines specialised in Architecture & Restoration wanting to present it. The villa has only one floor to guarantee maximum comfort, facing the large furnished outdoor terraces. An external staircase leads to the roof terrace on the first floor with a fully-equipped solarium with sea view from where you can admire unique sunsets, while enjoying a good glass of Tuscan wine.

Villa Zaca is in an ideal strategic position: it satisfies bikers and hikers thanks to the many trails in the surroundings (Volterraio Castle, the Red Pond, the Path of Love, just to name a few).

The beach of Ortano is equipped for various marine activities while the entire bay attracts snorkelers for its seabed and the beauty of its waters. The convenient port of Rio Marina is 4 km away where it is possible to embark on a trip to the island of Pianosa and spectacular Cala Giovanna. For dining, or for nightlife in general, you will be spoiled for choice: the panoramic piazzetta of Rio Elba (1.5km), the little port of Rio Marina (4km), elegant Porto Azzurro (9km) and, a little further on, the promenade of Cavo, the hiltop borgo of Capoliveri with its little twisting streets and the main town of the island, Portoferraio.

Villa Santa Maria has been subjected to a check-up by a technical responsible before the beginning of the season, to ensure consistency of the description, accessories listed on this page and their present state of operation/maintenance, to guarantee quality, cleanliness and comforts to all clients who will stay here.

  • Villa Zaca Overview

In respect of Tuscan tradition, and with emphasis on the use of biomaterials, note the ceilings with irregular Uso Fiume beams in cypress wood, natural lime transpiring plaster, Impruneta terracotta, antique Montelupo majolica, recycled pietra serena and Sienese travertine. The main door leads into an open-plan area with sitting and dining area and kitchen.

From here, a door leads to two bedrooms, a double bedroom, with ensuite study/library in the loft, and a twin bedroom with shared bathroom while, on the opposite side of the room, through another door, is a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom. All the rooms have direct access out to the garden and air conditioning.

    Exterior:

The entirely-fenced park of the villa includes a large circular car park at the entrance and is surrounded by a luxuriant wood of cork trees, pines, broom, laurel, myrtle, strawberry trees, palms and Mediterranean scrub with its unique scents.

To the right of the entrance is a beautiful olive grove suspended on a "purple bed" of verbena. Surrounding the villa are numerous porticoes covered by dried Mediterranean scrub and grassy areas with evergreen plants of particular beauty such as lippia nodiflora and zoysia japonica, designed to grow in maritime areas as well.

All around is a harmonious succession of edging and flower beds of multicoloured flowers and aromatic herbs with their intoxicating fragrances, useful for preparing tasty dishes both on the stone BBQ and in the brick oven. The peculiarity of the tiered garden is to allow those who stay here to discover, every day, various different areas in which to relax.

Please notice that photos are taken in spring, therefore flower blossoming, and the colours of the gardens' grass could be different at the moment of your arrival at the villa.

    Private pool:

Set just a few metres to the side of the house, and reached across the lawn, the rectangular pool measures 1.80 x 3.40 m with a constant depth of 0.70 m. above ground. Lined in sand-coloured PVC, it is equipped with a Jacuzzi corner, internal lighting, heating and waterproof seats on one side.

Just 23 km from the mainland, with an area of 224 kmq, Elba is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest of the Italian islands. It is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park together with Pianosa, Capraia, Montecristo, Giglio, Gorgona and Giannutri. The various landscapes are the strong point of the Island of Elba. Characteristic of the island is the encounter with a rich mosaic of different environments, each characterised by a unique and surprising flora, fauna and geology.

The island is dotted with varied beaches: beaches of white granite sand and smooth rocks in the western part, such as those of Marina di Campo, Cavoli, Fetovaia, Seccheto and Sant'Andrea; beaches of golden sand in the central part, both south and north-west, such as those of Procchio, Biodola, Lacona and Lido di Capoliveri; white pebble beaches in the part of the coast west of Portoferraio, which give the sea an exceptional transparency. Famous wines and excellent cuisine, combined with the pristine sea, the mild climate and the purity of the air, make Elba the ideal place for well-being, holidays and tourism in all seasons.

In October, on the occasion of the traditional Festa dell'Uva (Grape Festival), the island's main product, four districts confront each other, staging extraordinary choreographies based on different harvest themes. Other village festivals include that of the Innamorata, on July14, based on an ancient legend about the young lovers, Lorenzo and Maria, while in the first ten days of May the Festa del Cavatore (Feast of the Miner) is held in homage to the ancient origins of mining (iron mines) and granite production on the island.

There is also a lot of history with countless places of worship, churches and ancient hermitages, Etruscan fortifications, Pisan towers, Medici and Spanish , examples of impregnable architecture, as well as museums, archaeological sites, travelling exhibitions that recount the complex history of the island, including the assignment in "full ownership and sovereignty" to Napoleon Bonaparte who, in ten months of exile, left a signnificant mark here.

The island of Elba can be reached by boat from Piombino Marittima, where four shipping companies, Toremar, Blu Navy, Moby Lines and Corsica Ferries, have comfortable ferries that make multi-day trips. An hour of navigation is enough to reach Portoferraio (the main port), Cavo and Rio Marina. Alternatively, there is a fast connection by hydrofoil, for passenger transport only, which gets to Portoferraio in just 35 minutes. The airport of Marina di Campo, 33 km from Villa Zaca, connects the Island of Elba to the mainland, only during the summer. A Milan, Zurich, Bern, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Munich and Vienna.
